Things to do in Lisbon in winter: Christmas edition!

Are you looking for things to do in Lisbon this holiday season? During winter, Lisbon transforms into a magical wonderland, sweetened by the warmth of Christmas cheer.

Prepare for a journey filled with twinkling lights, unique markets, and unforgettable experiences. Here’s how to make the most of your winter adventure in the Portuguese capital.

1. Wander through Lisbon Christmas Markets

No trip to Lisbon in December is complete without visiting its Christmas markets, which blend tradition with modern flair. The most iconic is the Wonderland Lisboa, held in Eduardo VII Park. Picture wooden stalls brimming with cheerful treats like bolo-rei (‘king cake’), an ice rink for skating and a Ferris wheel for enjoying the view.

To embrace the local spirit, visit Campo Pequeno Christmas Market inside a grand neo-Arab building. You will find artisanal crafts and gourmet delicacies, perfect for picking up unique gifts!

What about Rossio Christmas Market? Located in the Rossio Square, this market welcomes you with warm wooden stalls, Christmas music and entertainment. From this market, you can also enjoy a ride on the Christmas train, which is 100% electric and free of charge.

These fairs aren’t just about shopping. They are a cultural experience, giving you a taste of Lisbon’s holiday traditions.

2. Admire the Christmas lights in Lisbon

When the sun sets, Lisbon shines even brighter during this joyful season. The city’s streets are adorned with stunning Christmas lights, turning neighbourhoods like Chiado and Baixa into enchanting spectacles.

Stroll through Avenida da Liberdade, where the tree-lined boulevard becomes a glowing tunnel. And don’t miss Praça do Comércio, the heart of Lisbon, with its magnificent Christmas tree and panoramic river views.

These lights are one of the most magical things to see in Lisbon during winter, offering countless photo opportunities for your festive album.

3. Take a Hop-On Hop-Off Lisbon Tour

To thoroughly explore Lisbon attractions, there is nothing better than a hop-on hop-off tour with Gray Line Lisbon. Combining convenience and flexibility, their Lisbon bus routes take you to the city’s most iconic landmarks while you enjoy majestic views from a cosy seat.

For a unique twist, pair your bus adventure with a Lisboat hop-on hop-off tour, which lets you explore Lisbon by water. Imagine cruising the Tagus River, wrapped in a warm scarf, as the city’s Christmas lights reflect on the water – a perspective of Lisbon you will treasure forever

4. Discover the best places to visit in Lisbon for free

Winter in Lisbon doesn’t have to break the bank. Some of the best places to visit in Lisbon for free offer spectacular views and unforgettable experiences. Climb to Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, one of the highest viewpoints in the city, where you’ll be rewarded with stunning panoramas of Lisbon’s red rooftops and the Tagus River.

Another must-see is Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest neighbourhood. Its narrow alleys and colourful facades come alive with bright decorations during Christmas, offering a charming atmosphere for a winter stroll.

5. Experience Lisbon in just 1 day

Pressed for time? Even with just 1 day in Lisbon, you can soak up the city’s festive spirit. Begin your morning with a hop-on hop-off Lisbon boat tour to explore major landmarks along the river. Hop off in Belém to explore the monuments from the Age of Discovery, have lunch or try a ‘pastel de Belém’. Return by boat or bus to the city centre and dive into Lisbon’s rich culinary scene by tasting holiday delights such as roasted chestnuts, sold on nearly every street corner.

As night falls, make your way to Praça do Comércio to marvel at the dazzling Christmas tree.

The Lisboat’s “Clean & Safe” boat tours on the Tagus river

Lisboat, without any hesitation, has adopted the “Clean & Safe” seal issued by the National Tourism Authority. What does it mean? It means that Lisboat complies with health safety recommendations and requirements delivered by the National Health Authority for hygiene and cleaning of spaces, aiming at the prevention and control of COVID 19 and other possible infections.

In other words, at Lisboat we are sincerely committed to our team and customers’ safety. That’s why we did not hesitate to adopt all measures within our reach to ensure that each Lisboat trip is a very safe and fun experience for everyone.

Main “Clean & Safe” measures

We have carried out several measures within the pandemic context. You can learn more about all on our “Clean & Safe” page. However, here are the main cleaning and hygiene procedures that, for Lisboat, are already part of the “new normal”:

The use of a face mask is mandatory for all customers and crew.

Alcohol-gel dispensers (or other antiseptic solution) are available at all sales points and at boat entrances.

• When boarding, please respect the safety distance of 2 meters between each group/family.

• Inside the boat, please take the seat indicated by the crew. The same family group can occupy seats next to each other.

• Please do not forget to comply with the respiratory conduct rules: coughing or sneezing into the forearm or using a tissue, which should then be immediately thrown away; hand hygiene always after coughing or sneezing and after blowing your nose; avoid touching the eyes, nose, and mouth with your hands.

Boats and sales stands are cleaned, at least, twice a day: before the start and after the end of the operation.

• Also, on boats, the sanitation of most used surfaces must occur before and after every boarding, particularly on the most exposed areas, namely chairs, handles, and handrails.

Boat’s bathrooms are always cleaned after use by customers.

Every day we work so that the “new” normal means safety, fun, and tranquility for all those who work and travel with us.

Every day, our magnificent crew strives to provide you with the best experience on the Tagus river, the most fantastic group or family experience, the safest and most relaxed river trip that Lisbon has ever seen!

Lisboat, is a new “normal” way to love Lisbon.
